Smith starts her own seamstress business

Pants a little too long? Button come off your shirt? There is a new business in town, Needle & Thread, ready to help with your sewing needs.

Debb Smith, owner, started Needle & Thread after leaving the Iowa Speedway as a human resources director. She had always sewn in her free time but had a backlog of projects while being employed full-time.

“When I worked, I would get something that would need to be hemmed and it would sit here for a few weeks and I wouldn’t have time to do it so I would hand it off to someone else,” Smith said. “Now I have the time.”

Starting at a young age, Smith learned how to sew from her mother and continued while in 4-H. Throughout the years, she has sewn a little bit of everything including quilts and knitting. For now, she would mainly like to focus on minor sewing needs such as ripped seams, hemming or minor alterations.

“I’m kind-of looking for the clothes you wear everday,” Smith said.

Smith is also exploring the idea of teaching people how to sew. If a customer was wanting an item fixed and they also wanted to learn how to fix it themselves, Smith would be open to showing them how.

“If somebody wants to learn how to hem their own pants I’d be willing to teach them how to do that, too,” Smith said.
