Newton Police Department

• John L. Britton, 48, of Newton was charged with public intoxication after authorities were called at 5:44 p.m. July 17 to Skiff Medical Center in reference to a man causing problems. Britton smelled of alcohol and needed assistance walking, and he attempted to leave the hospital after refusing medical treatment. He had a BAC of .247 and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Brianna J. Brown, 19, of Washington was arrested at 12:10 a.m. July 19 on a Johnson County warrant for violation of a no contact order after authorities went to 1650 S. 15th Ave. W. looking for her. She taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Gage J. Henning, 21, of Newton was cited with unsafe turn/failure to give signal after authorities responded to an accident at 11:51 a.m. July 16 to the intersection of East 10th Street South and South 13th Avenue East. Henning was turning around in the intersection when his vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by Jacob Britton, 24, of Newton, who was traveling east through the intersection. Henning failed to yield to Britton as he was turning left. Both vehicles sustained an estimated $3,500 in damage.

• Christopher S. Kingrey, 22, of Newton was arrested at 9:15 a.m. July 18 on a Poweshiek County warrant for providing alcohol to minors after authorities went to 804 S. 15th Ave. W. #8 looking for him. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• William S. Peck, 47, of Newton was arrested at 6:15 p.m. July 14 at 1111 N. 11th Ave. E. and charged with possession of more than five grams of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a Class B felony, in connection with an incident that occurred Jan. 18. At that time, officers were dispatched to 1022 E. 12th St. N. in reference to a medical issue. While medical personnel were assisting Peck, officers found multiple baggies containing white residue. The substance tested positive for meth. After being located July 14, Peck was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Logan D. Plante, 18, was arrested at 1:05 a.m. July 21 on four Jasper County warrants for failure to appear on possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and fourth- and fifth-degree theft after authorities located him walking down the sidewalk in the 800 block of East Fourth Street South. After making contact, Plante identified himself as Tyler Plante, and authorities determined he was wanted on a warrant. While being handcuffed, police determined he was not Tyler. He was identified as Logan and placed under arrest for his outstanding warrants as well as possession of drug paraphernalia and harassment of public officers. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Mariah A. Smith, 18, of Colfax was charged with public intoxication after authorities observed four young subjects walking west at 4:43 a.m. July 19 in the 200 block of North Eighth Avenue East. Smith stated the she had been drinking, and a preliminary breath test indicated a BAC of .100. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jacob R. Stengele, 20, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities were called at 10:45 p.m. Monday to Walmart after store employees observed him remove a single golf ball from a pack of six and conceal it in his pocket before attempting to leave the store. The merchandise was valued at $6.39. He was released to appear in court.

• Brandley T. Svatos, 37, of Newton was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped his vehicle at 11:18 p.m. July 16 in the 200 block of East 17th Street North for having a brake light out. He was found to be under suspension and was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
