NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks turned a corner in 2014. The Hawk baseball team’s season ended Tuesday night in a Class 1A District 11 tournament quarterfinal game.
North Mahaska pitcher Trent Roose and the Warhawks shut out the Hawks, 7-0. Roose limited the Hawks to one hit. He issued one walk and struck out 13 Hawk batters.
Lynnville-Sully finished with a 12-11 mark for its first winning season in six years. The Hawks went 5-20 a year ago.
In their final game of the season, the Hawks got a single from junior Jake Brand.
Senior Daniel Zimmerman pitched five innings as the starter. He was charged with five runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out two. Freshman Tyler Van Zante worked one inning, giving up two runs on two hits and one walk, and struck out one.
The Warhawks scored twice in the first inning and single runs in the third and fourth innings. They added three runs in the sixth.
Zimmerman and six other seniors played their final game for Lynnville-Sully. Other seniors are Payton Scandridge, Zack Kaldenberg, Zach Maasdam, Brandon Dunsbergen, T.J. Cunningham and Caleb VanderMolen.
