Warriors deck Cardinals
NEWTON — Newton’s Cardinals managed three hits and one run in two five-inning games Tuesday at home against the Iowa Class 4A fifth-ranked Norwalk Warriors.
The Cardinals dropped the Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader, 12-0 and 9-1, at Berg Middle School.
In the opener, Madison Bagnall’s single in the first inning with two gone was the only time a Cardinal runner was on base against the Warriors. Taylor Goode and the Warriors retired the Cardinals in order the other four innings.
Norwalk scored four runs each in the first and third innings. The Warriors added a run in the fourth. A three-run third started with a solo blast over the left center field fence by Talia Zook.
Ashton Hoffman took the pitching loss for Newton. She gave up 14 hits, walked three and struck out one.
The second game was halted after five innings because of a lighting issue around home plate, according to Newton head coach Ashley Ryan.
The Cardinals trailed 4-0 when they scored a run in the third inning.
Bailey Davis reached on an error with two gone in the third. Lizzie Stock doubled and then Kari Adams was safe on an error allowing Davis to cross the plate.
Norwalk responded by scoring five times in the fourth for the final margin, 9-1.
