J.E. ‘Jed’ Hicks

Shellsburg —  J.E. “Jed” Hicks, 58, of rural Shellsburg died Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born on Aug. 4, 1955, in Newton, the son of Elgie Arvil and Mildred Eileene (Middleton) Hicks. He graduated from high school in Newton with the Class of 1973. Until he retired, Mr. Hicks was an electrician and lineman for Alliant Energy. In his free time, he enjoyed camping and fishing and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He also had a knack for taking care of house plants.

Mr. Hicks is survived by his mother and step father, Mildred Hicks and Leonard McClenathan of Independence; 2 sons, Tom Hicks of Des Moines and Brian (Heather) Hicks of Altoona; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Jess (Sherry) Hicks of Des Moines; numerous cousins; and his best friend, Stacy Zonka of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. His cremated remains will be placed in the Cremation Garden at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may gather for visitation for an hour before services at the funeral home.
