Newton Police Department
• Jessica L. Burckel, 26, and Jennifer R. McMahon, 26, both of Newton, were charged with child endangerment, a Class D felony, after authorities assisted the Iowa Department of Human Services with an investigation of a child abuse report received May 21 at a Newton residence. Both women were charged for allegedly assaulting a 6-year-old boy, resulting in bruising. Burckel was charged Wednesday and released to appear in court, and McMahon was charged Tuesday and released to appear in court.
• Austin J. Clark, 20, of Newton was charged Saturday with fifth-degree theft after authorities investigated a complaint received at 3 p.m. April 8 from Hy-Vee. He was located at 3:33 a.m. Saturday at 1453 N. 11th Ave. E. and was charged for allegedly leaving the store April 8 without paying for a 99-cent bag of potatoes. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Jorge A. Flores-Estrada, 31, of Mingo was charged with criminal trespass after authorities responded to an incident at 7:31 p.m. Saturday at a residence in the 500 block of South Fourth Avenue East. Flores-Estrada allegedly was at the property after previously being told he was no longer allowed on the property. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Paul L. Harris III, 25, address unknown, was charged June 6 with serious assault in connection with an incident reported at 1:39 a.m. June 3 in the 500 block of South Fourth Avenue East. He was charged for allegedly punching a female in the face several times, causing her to fall, hit the corner of a table and cut her head. He was located at 6:53 p.m. June 6 at 308 E. Eighth St. N. and transported him to the Jasper County Jail.
• Laura K. Hinshaw, 31, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a theft at Hy-Vee at 1:10 p.m. June 5. She was charged for allegedly attempting to steal a $14.99 pair of sunglasses and was released to appear in court.
• Danny V. Hobbs, 37, of Newton was charged with public intoxication (second offense) after authorities located him lying on the sidewalk at 1:22 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of South Second Avenue West. He was transported to the Skiff Medical Center Emergency Room. He was charged and released to appear in court.
• Jason L. Johnson, 32, of St. Louis, Mo., was charged with public intoxication after authorities responded to a complaint of a male passed out on the road at 3:08 a.m. Thursday at Rolling Acres Campground. He smelled of alcohol but refused a breath test. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Carah A. Leavens, 25, of Newton was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to an incident shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday at Walmart. Leavens was charged for allegedly attempting to steal merchandise valued at $81.36 and for allegedly having .9 gram of marijuana and a marijuana pipe in her purse during her arrest. She was released to appear in court.
• Marty A. McConnell, 31, of Newton was charged with serious assault after authorities were dispatched at 5:19 a.m. Saturday to the Skiff Medical Center Emergency Room. The victim stated McConnell assaulted him several times, resulting in a lump on his head and a laceration to the back of his head. McConnell was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Erinn E. Riggen, 22, of Knoxville was charged with simple assault after authorities responded to a report of a female lying on train tracks at 1:51 p.m. June 9 in the 1000 block of East Seventh Street North. She was transported to the Skiff Medical Center Emergency Room, where she allegedly assaulted a staff member. She was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Benjamin M. Rooker, 24, of Newton was charged with public intoxication Saturday after authorities investigated an a report received at 5:27 a.m. March 15. At that time, police responded to a complaint of a man lying on the ground in the 1600 block of West Fourth Street North near Union Cemetery. He smelled of alcohol and was transported to the Skiff Medical Center Emergency Room. He was located at 2:25 a.m. Saturday at 109 First Ave. W. and transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Jason A. Stanton, 34, of Newton was charged with public intoxication after authorities responded to a report of a possibly intoxicated male at 1:05 p.m. June 6 in the Newton Baptist Temple parking lot. Stanton smelled of alcohol but refused sobriety tests. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Nicholas A. Viola, 22, and Alora A. King, 23, both of Newton, were charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a complaint at 10:11 a.m. Sunday at Walmart. Viola and King were charged for allegedly placing several items, valued at a total of $54.12, in King’s purse and leaving the store without paying. The were charged and released to appear in court.
Jasper County Sheriff’s Office
• Lindsay P. Leonard, 39, of Kellogg was charged with public intoxication and false reports or communication with public safety entities after authorities responded to a report at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at her residence, in the 100 block of Pleasantview Drive in Jasper County. Leonard was charged for allegedly giving a false report to authorities, indicating another person had hurt himself, and for allegedly being intoxicated at the time of the incident. She was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
