Area baseball/softball roundup

CMB softball 7, Saydel 2

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s softball team had a little more room to spare in their second win of the season than it did its first

After winning its season opener Tuesday night, 4-3, CMB created a seven-run cushion Wednesday night before beating Saydel, 7-2.

The Raiders increased their lead in the middle innings by scoring five times between the fourth and fifth innings. Payge Jurgens’ two-RBI single in the fourth doubled CMB’s lead to 4-0. CMB then scored three more in the fifth on a pair of RBI ground outs and a fielding error by Saydel.

Saydel scored both of its runs in the seventh inning with the Raiders well in control.

Heather Jessen earned the win in the circle for CMB. She allowed three hits while striking out four and walking two.

C-M softball 15, North Polk 9

Colfax-Mingo picked up its first win of the season Wednesday night, and did so in extra innings.

After North Polk erased Colfax-Mingo’s four-run advantage in the sixth and seventh innings, the Tigerhawks erupted for six runs in the top of the eighth and won, 15-9.

Four doubles off the bats of Amy Russell, Brooke Nicholson, Rhiannon Haley and Ries Wilson highlighted the Tigerhawks’ offense in the extra frame. Russell’s double drove in two runs to break the tie and Wilson’s finished the outburst.

“It was great to see our bats be productive and score so many runs,” Colfax-Mingo head coach Bryan Poulter said, noting his team’s at-bats improved as the game progressed.

Six players had at least two hits for Colfax-Mingo. Russell and Haley each had four hits, including a solo home run from Russell in the third inning.

Russell was also the pitcher of record for the Tigerhawks. The freshman struck out eight and walked three. She yielded only three earned runs.

PCM softball 9, Gilbert 0

Racheal Freland helped Prairie City-Monroe from the pitching circle and the batter’s box in a 9-0 win over Gilbert Wednesday night.

Freland earned the win while striking out six Gilbert batters. She also drove in two runs for the Mustangs.

Jayci Vos and Molly Vignovich led PCM offensively with a pair of 4-for-4 performances. Vos also had two RBIs, and Abbi Gilson drove in three more runs in the win.

PCM’s next game is against Green County on Friday. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.

Gilbert baseball 11, PCM 5

One game after Prairie City-Monroe’s own double-digit run output led to a win, the Mustangs’ opponent found similar success Wednesday night.

Gilbert defeated PCM, 11-5, thanks in large part to putting runs on the board early and often. Gilbert scored in each of the first four innings and led host PCM, 10-1, heading into the top of the fifth.

Mustang starting pitcher Chase Keuning lasted only 2 1/3 innings while yielding seven earned runs.

Clay Cooper highlighted PCM’s offensive attack against Gilbert, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

North Polk baseball 20, C-M 0

Seth Milledge knows there’s going to be games like this one for his young Colfax-Mingo baseball team.

He just hopes his players learn from them.

The Tigerhawks lost another run-rule shortened game Wednesday night in a 20-0 drubbing to North Polk. The game ended after three innings because North Polk led by at least 15 runs.

North Polk took a commanding 10-0 lead in the first inning off Colfax-Mingo senior pitcher Nate Smith. North Polk tagged Smith for six hits in the inning, including a home run off the bat of Austin Hillebo.

North Polk’s Cole Jackson and Reed Smith each added another home run in the decisive third inning.

Colfax-Mingo lost its season opener on Tuesday night in similar fashion, a five-inning, 11-1 defeat against Gilbert.
