Cardinal golfers take fifth at Southeast Polk Invitational

PLEASANT HILL — Newton Cardinal golfers finished fifth at the 2014 Southeast Polk Invitational Thursday. The NHS girls combined for a 370 on the Copper Creek Golf Course.

West Des Moines Valley captured the team title with a 340. Dowling Catholic posted a 347 and Johnston had a 349 for third place. There were 12 teams in the 18-hole tournament field.

Shelbey Cochran and Madigan Hillyard each carded a 91 to lead the Cardinals. Madeline Wellik shot a 92 as the trio finished in 20th, 21st and 22nd overall. Carrie Cunningham came in with a 96 for 29th.

Cydney Hillyard finished with a 96 and Jessica Reynolds carded a 97.

Newton competes at South Tama on Saturday. The Cardinals host their final Little Hawkeye Conference triangular nine-hole meet Tuesday. Dallas Center-Grimes and Norwalk join Newton, which is undefeated in conference play, at Westwood Golf Course.
