Cardinal soccer teams sweep Oskaloosa
OSKALOOSA — Newton’s Cardinal soccer teams posted a Little Hawkeye Conference sweep on the road Tuesday night.
First, the 11th-ranked Cardinal girls came back from a quick opening goal by host Oskaloosa to win 3-1. They improved to 3-1 in conference action and 9-1 overall.
To end the night, the Cardinal boys recorded their sixth shutout of the season, beating the Indians, 4-0. Newton’s boys are 9-5 overall and 4-1 in LHC play.
“We didn’t play our best soccer (Tuesday),” said Cathy Reiter, NHS girls’ head coach. “We were scored on in the very first minute of the game, and it took sometime for us to get going even after that goal.”
Amber Karsten’s three goals did the trick for the Cardinals. Karsten used a pass from Kari Adams to score the equalizer with 17 minutes left in the first half. Twelve minutes later, Karsten found the net again off a pass from Hannah Rhoads.
Newton’s girls led 2-1 at the break. Anna Barr was credited with an assist when Karsten scored seven minutes into the second half. Emily Forsyth racked up five saves playing in goal for the Cardinals.
Newton’s boys got two goals from Mike McCormick, who also had an assist. Duncan Lee and Nathan Moorman each added a goal. The Cardinals had 14 shots on goal.
Griffin Engel made two saves as the NHS goalkeeper against Oskaloosa.
The Cardinal girls play at home Thursday against Marshalltown at H.A. Lynn Stadium. They travel to Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Friday.
The Cardinal boys are at home next Tuesday against Pella in LHC action.
