Newton Police Department

• Miguel J. Barrett, 21, was arrested on a Jasper County warrant for probation violation after authorities located him at 6:40 p.m. May 6 at 701 E. 25th St. S. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Charles E. Barton, 63, of Norfolk was charged with failure to yield to vehicle on the right after authorities responded to a two-vehicle accident at 2:20 p.m. April 28. Barton was traveling south on East Eighth Street North and driving through the intersection of First Avenue East when he collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by Janice K. DePenning, 68, of Newton. The intersection’s lights were not functioning properly and were flashing red. DePenning’s vehicle sustained an estimated $900 damage and Barton’s an estimated $300 damage.

• Nathan M. Beintema, 30, of Newton was arrested on a Jasper County warrant for failure to appear in court on an operating while intoxicated charge after authorities stopped a vehicle in which he was a passenger at 4:20 p.m. May 2 in the 1800 block of South Seventh Avenue East. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Nikia M. Coley, 31, of Newton was charged with operating while intoxicated and driving while license suspended after authorities observed a motorist playing loud music at 12:15 a.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of First Avenue East. Police ran the license plate and determined Coley was the owner of the vehicle and that her license had been suspended. Police confirmed the driver resembled the registered owner and observed her exiting the car, going into Kum & Go, returning to the car and getting in the passenger seat. Police made contact with Coley and could smell alcohol coming from her. She failed sobriety tests and registered a BAC of .131 on a Datamaster test. She was charged and released to appear in court.

• Lexus M. Daniels, 16, Cedar Rapids was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a theft complaint at 5:43 p.m. April 28 at Walmart. She was charged for allegedly taking items valued at $10.55 without paying and released to appear in court.

• Terry A. Edwards, 58, of Waukee was charged with operating while intoxicated, second offense, after authorities received a report at 7:35 p.m. April 29 of a motorist driving recklessly on Interstate 80. The suspect vehicle was located at the 165 mile marker and stopped. The driver, Edwards, smelled of alcohol, and a preliminary breath test indicated a BAC of higher than .08. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Joshua J. Hall, 27, of Des Moines was charged with possession of marijuana, second offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities stopped him at 10:16 p.m. April 28 in the 100 block of Highway 14 North for having an inoperable license plate light. Authorities smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Hall admitted to smoking marijuana and to having marijuana, weighing approximately .06 ounce, in his shoe and a pipe in his trunk. He was charged and released to appear in court.

• Terry W. Housley, 40, of Newton was charged with first-degree burglary after authorities responded to an assault complaint at 12:46 p.m. Feb. 24 at a residence in the 800 block of North Seventh Avenue West. Housley was charged for allegedly entering the house without permission and hitting a male victim in the face, causing injuries. Housley was picked up at 4 p.m. April 29 at the Polk County Jail and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Lance A. Jones, 22, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities were dispatched at 11:16 a.m. April 28 to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. Jones was charged for allegedly putting items valued at a total of $54.55 in his pockets. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Robert L. Long Jr., 20, of Des Moines was charged with violation of a no-contact order after authorities responded to a complaint at 7:09 p.m. Thursday at a residence in the 900 block of South 13th Avenue East. Long was charged for allegedly calling and texting the protected party and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Troy D. Lovely Jr., 23, of Harvey was cited with following too close and no insurance after authorities responded to a two-vehicle accident at 5:07 p.m. May 1. Lovely was traveling south in the 1100 block of East 19th Street North when he struck the rear of a vehicle ahead of him driven by Timothy P. Linahon, 46, of Newton as Linahon stopped at the intersection at North 11th Avenue East. No one was injured. Lovely’s vehicle was not damaged, and Linahon’s vehicle sustained an estimated $500 damage.

• Brandon W. McConnell, 26, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a theft report at 8:46 p.m. April 23 at The Shoe Dept. He was charged for allegedly concealing a pair of shoes valued at $80.24 under his coat and leaving the store. Two male employees identified him. McConnell was served his charge May 6 at the Jasper County Jail.

• Alexander G. Meehan, 20, of Newton was charged with operating while intoxicated and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities observed a suspicious vehicle at 1:35 a.m. May 5 in Union Cemetery. Police stopped the vehicle in the 1800 block of First Street North and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Meehan. A breath test indicated a BAC of .168. During a search of the vehicle, authorities found rolling papers, and Meehan also stated the marijuana pipes on his person belonged to him. He was charged and released to appear in court.

• Jerald T. Navarre, 37, of North Liberty was arrested on a Scott County warrant for failure to appear in court on a public intoxication charge and a Johnson County warrant for failure to appear in court for probation review after authorities responded to a disturbance at 1:15 a.m. May 3 at 1800 S. Seventh Ave. E. #11A. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Danielle J. Villarreal, 20, of Newton was charged with serious domestic assault after authorities responded to an assault complaint at 8:17 p.m. May 5 at Maytag Park. She was charged for allegedly assaulting a male and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Caleb J. Wilson, 23, of Newton was arrested on a Jasper County warrant for probation violation after authorities located him at 7:49 p.m. April 28 at 109 N. 13th Ave. W. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
