Cards outlast Grinnell

NEWTON — Offense was on display at H.A. Lynn Stadium Tuesday night. Newton’s Cardinal boys and visiting Grinnell’s Tigers combined for 10 goals.

The Cardinals prevailed, 6-4, in the Little Hawkeye Conference contest. They led 5-1 at halftime.

Josh Ventling and Nathan Moorman each scored twice for Newton. Chandler Sturtz found the net once and Mike McCormick’s goal finished the scoring for Newton.

McCormick was credited with three assists on the night. Ventling had one assist.

For the Tigers, Luke Honold recorded a hat trick — three goals. Kenny Clark scored the other one for Grinnell.

Newton’s goalkeeper, Griffin Engel, made four saves.

The Cardinals moved to 5-4 on the season and 3-1 in LHC action. They travel to Monroe Thursday for a non-conference game against Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs.

Newton competes in a tournament at Nevada Saturday.
