Lady Raiders win home track meet
BAXTER — Sitting in second place heading into the final two events of its home meet, Collins-Maxwell Baxter’s girls track team knew it needed some top-notch performances to close out the night and finish in first.
The Lady Raiders’ relay teams delivered those much needed performances.
CMB’s 4x100-meter relay team and 4x400-meter relay team placed first and second in their respecitive events, earning the Lady Raiders enough points to claim the team title at the Lady Raider Relays. CMB finished with 144 points, just ahead of Colfax-Mingo’s 138 points.
The foursome of Maddy Poage, Toni Spencer, Bridget Hurley and Mackenzie Schmitz scored 10 points for CMB by winning the 4x100 in 53.01 seconds. Then in the next event, the 4x400, Megan Ritter, Aly Holsinger, Kathleen Baldwin and Abbie Haupert crossed the finish line in 4:39.71 to place second.
“This was truly a team win tonight for our girls,” CMB head coach Jerry Meinerts wrote in an email.
Spencer, Hurley and Haupert also won three individual events. Spencer claimed the long jump title with a mark of 14-9 3/4. She won the event on her final jump, which was barely was enough for first and topped second place by 1/2 inch.
Hurley won the 400-meters with more room to spare than Spencer did in the long jump. Hurley posted a time of 1:05.78 and had a roughly 15-meter lead as she ran through the final 100 meters of the race.
“I felt like I had a shot at winning it, but I didn’t know what the lead was when I was running it,” Hurley said following her victory. “I don’t notice the other girls when I’m running. I just try to focus. Unless they’re in front of me, I can’t really tell where they are on the track.”
CMB scored 50 points in the field events, including 10 when Haupert threw the discus 115-11 1/2, a career-best mark that earned her first place in the event.
Payge Jurgens won the shot put with a throw of 35-10, a distance two inches shy of her career-best mark.
“Our field events helped us win this meet tonight as well,” Meinerts said.
The Lady Raiders also received some much needed points from Heather Jessen, Chasity Moody and Chantel Maxwell in the distance events. Jessen finished second in the 3,000 meters (13:19) and fifth in the 1,500 meters (6:05). Moody placed fouth in the 3,000 (14:29) and Maxwel sixth in the 1,500 (6:28).
“We just needed to score some points in that race (1,500) and they stepped up and did that for us,” Meinerts said.
“It was a great team win for us tonight. Our unofficial motto for the night was ‘do it for the seniors.’ ... it was nice to win this home meet for them. They’ve done a great job for us all four years and it was nice to see their faces light up after they announced the scores and they got to enjoy one nice easy victory lap on their home track.”
