Fillies hand Cardinals first loss

NEWTON — As cold and nasty as the spring night weather was, that’s how things went in the game for Newton’s Cardinals. The 12th-ranked Cardinal girls got handed their first defeat of the 2014 season Tuesday at home.

Visiting Dallas Center-Grimes’ Fillies, 10th ranked in Class 2A, defeated the Cardinals, 2-0, at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The Fillies scored on a corner kick with two minutes left in the first half for a 1-0 lead at the break.

Midway through the second half, the Fillies added a goal on a shot from 20 yards out.

“I am proud of how hard the girls worked the entire night, but we made it hard on ourselves as we struggled to connect passes,” said Cathy Reiter, Newton head coach. “DCG is a very talented team and were very effective in switching the field and playing to feet. We know what we have to work on in moving forward to get ready for Perry on Friday.”

Newton senior goalkeeper Emily Forsyth was credited with four saves. Reiter said the Cardinals had the the ball down in the box against Dallas Center-Grimes for a few scrambles but didn’t really have any shots on goal.

Newton is 6-1 on the season and is 1-1 in Little Hawkeye Conference play after losing to the Fillies (4-3). The Cardinals are at Perry Friday.
