Newton boys post strong marks

NORWALK — Christian Laube claimed the lone gold medal of the meet for Newton’s Cardinals Monday at the Norwalk Boys Invitational. Laube won the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 29.41 seconds.

Monday’s meet was the final tune-up for Newton’s Drake Relays qualifiers. The Cardinals scored 45 points for ninth place. Ames won the team title, amassing 116 points.

“The boys had a chance to compete against some great competition at the Norwalk meet,” said Tom Bartello, Newton boys’ head coach.

Deonne Harris, J.T. Thongvanh, Jarom Williams and Earl Kimmel will be competing at Drake Relays later this week in Des Moines. Harris qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles and joins with Thongvanh, Williams and Kimmel on the 4x100-meter relay.

On Friday at Drake Stadium, Harris runs in the 110-meter hurdle preliminaries at 8:16 a.m., with the finals at 11:40 a.m. The Cardinal 4x100-meter relay runs in preliminaries at 6:10 p.m. and those finals will be at 3:40 p.m. Saturday.

At Norwalk, Harris ran a personal-best time of 14.51 seconds for second place in the 110-meter hurdles. The 4x400-meter relay team posted a 46.69-second time for fourth.

Thongvanh placed seventh in the 100-meter dash in 11.52 seconds and Kimmel was 14th in 12.14. Williams took sixth in the 200-meter dash in 23.54 seconds and seventh in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 7 inches.

Jacob Thomas finished sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:14.17 with Justin Simms running 16th in 2:24.58. Thomas placed seventh in the 1,600-meter race in 4:56.03 and Laube was ninth in 5:00. Zach Theis finished 13th in the 3,200-meter run in 12:26.70.

Jake Bennett was 10th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.10. In the 400-meter dash, Sean Cook ran 16th in 57.97 and Levi Michener pas 17th in 1:00.33.

The Cardinals’ 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay team placed fifth in 1:02.46. The 1,600-meter distance medley relay also took fifth in 4:08.68.

Newton’s 4x800-meter relay team ran seventh in 9:19.16. In the 4x400-meter relay race, the Cardinals were ninth in 4:05.40.

Mason Bowes took 13th in both the discus (113’8”) and the shot put (38’10) while Collin Daniels was 17th in the shot put (25’11”) and 18th in the discus (65’1’).

Newton is back in action a full team next Thursday, May 1, at Grinnell.

In the junior varsity division: Jason Wu was fifth in the 100-meter dash, 12.54, and Collin Jacobsen was 12th in 15.60 seconds; Wu placed ninth in the 200-meter dash in 26.93 and Jacobsen ran 12th in 32.73; Jacobsen was 10th in the 400-meter dash in 1:12.39 and Devin Wolf was 11th in 1:49.52; Wolf placed ninth in the 800-meter run in 4:25.43; and Theis was seventh in the 1,600-meter race in 5:42.32.
