Branstad will release 2013 tax returns

DES MOINES (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad is releasing his tax returns, something he’s done every year he’s served as governor to promote transparency.

Returns released a year ago showed the governor and his wife, Chris, earned $226,728 in 2012.

Most of the income comes from his governor’s paycheck but he also continues to collect from the state’s retirement pension fund from his earlier service as governor, lieutenant governor and legislator.

Branstad in past years also has reported income from capital gains from an Iowa banking company in which he owns shares and business income from his ownership of 13 small town post offices, for which he is paid rent.

Branstad’s Democratic opponent, Sen. Jack Hatch, released documents Tuesday showing income of $468,591 from real estate development businesses and his state senator salary.
