Cardinals drop LHC soccer opener

Pella Christian loses

NORWALK — Opening Little Hawkeye Conference soccer play on the road Tuesday, Newton’s Cardinal boys came up short. The Cardinals lost 2-0 to host Norwalk.

Norwalk’s Warriors got two goals from Sam Steenhoek as they had 21 shots on goal. Under pressure all night, Newton’s goalkeeper Griffin Engel made 10 saves.

Newton dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action. Norwalk moved to 3-0 and 1-0.

Also in Little Hawkeye Conference action Tuesday, Pella Christian’s Eagles lost 8-1 to Dallas Center-Grimes in Pella. The Eagles (1-2, 0-1) came up with a goal by John Admiraal, who has scored five of Pella Christian’s seven goals this season in three games.

Josh Fopma and Jackson Flagel split time in goal for the Eagles against the Mustangs Tuesday. Fopma was credited with eight saves and Flagel had four saves.

Fopma has 20 saves in three games for the Eagles, including 11 saves in a 3-1 loss to Albia.
