PCM soccer teams are kickin’ it in 2014

Mustang boys’ golf team ready to tee off

MONROE — Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustang soccer teams blend in players from several other area schools for the 2014 seasons. The PCM boys’ golf team returns four from its Iowa Class 2A runner-up team from 2013.

These three Mustang spring teams get things going this week.

Seniors Ryan Jennings, Justin Beener and Devon Woody finished 19th, 20th and 21st at the 2013 Class 2A state golf tournament. They helped the Mustangs take the runner- up spot at state. Junior Wade Hill also played at the state meet. Sophomore Reid Jenkins brings back varsity experience.

The Mustangs have a new head coach in John Shawver. PCM’s Mike Smith retired from coaching last year.

“We have 16 players on the roster. I look for us to be very competitive and have a chance to compete at state again this year,” Shawver said. Shawver is the PGA golf pro at Newton’s Fore Seasons Golf Practice Center. His assistant coach for the PCM team is Brad Hill.

Other members of the Mustang golf team are juniors Tanner Wilkie, Chase Keuning and Ryan Brodersen; sophomores Collin Rink and Josh Phifer; and freshmen Jon Adams, Lucas Ingle, Branden Phifer, Ethan Thomas, Ryan Hill and Reece Brodersen.

Girls Soccer

Bill Sowder takes the reins of the PCM girls’ soccer team, which played .500 soccer a year ago. The Mustang girls made it to the second round of the playoffs, losing to Pella.

Sowder has been coaching soccer since 1993 but is a first-year coach at PCM. Also new is assistant coach Stephanie Langstraat. The team has players from PCM and Colfax-Mingo schools.

“We have 10 returning varsity girls,” Sowder said. “We’re working to be competitive in every game we play.”

Back for the Mustangs are Taylor Davenport at goalie, Jennafer Uitermarkt at midfielder and forward, Megan Winegar at midfielder, Haley Konek as a defender, Jaelyn Hogue as a midfielder and forward, Alea Brierly as a defender, Kennah Walters at forward, Jessica Albright at midfield and forward, Mallory Bell at midfield and Tessa Dekak on defense.

Sowder said Faith Martin, Payton Pool, Bella George, Abby Waddell, Jaiden Rogers and Ashley Lafferty should provide contributions to the varsity team.

Boys Soccer

The PCM boys’ 2014 soccer team has a core of Mustang players with a blend of eight athletes from Lynnville-Sully and three players from Colfax-Mingo.

“We are led by a group of seniors, who have played in fall leagues, indoor leagues in the winter, and couldn’t wait to get started this spring,” Mustang head coach Darrin Telfer said. “We do have a tough schedule ahead of us with I believe four or five of the teams we play, made it to the state tournament last year.”

The Mustangs are 0-3 after last week’s start to the season. Telfer said the Mustangs have their work cut out for them this season but he isn’t worried as long as the Mustangs improve game by game.

“We need to get some pieces put into place then we will be a good team by the end of the year,” Telfer said. “We have approximately 13 returning letterwinners, so we do return some experience. Our senior class is our strength and we have some good talent in the younger players as well.”

Seven of the returning players started for PCM’s varsity at some point last season. Telfer said the players gel well together for having three schools playing for one team.

“I look forward to a good year, lots of fun and lots of players getting to play a game they love to play,” Telfer said.

Members of the Mustang team are Caleb Vander Molen, Lucas Rosendal, Korey Exline, Tyler Espencheid, Devin Herndon, Carson King, Blake McWilliams, Luke Cummings, Dakota Lisk, Chris Stuva, Jarrett Maggard, Nic Lirio, Cody VandeBroek, Ryan Donahue, Talon Woods, Mark Hartgers, Derrick Hoodjer, Alex Fraker, Anton Lysov, Nic Naber, Zac Van Woordhuizen, Chase Kuecker, Max Van Gorp, Ryan Kohlhof, Quinton Thompson, Jim Tritten, Jake Vittetoe, Zac Read, Graham Davis, Connor Brey, Charlie Schott, Austin Wolfe, Chase Wilke, Andreas Vargas, and Jake Phillips.
