Cardinal boys take second in home tournament

NEWTON — Newton’s Cardinal boys recorded a 2-0 win in their 2014 soccer opener at home Saturday morning. The Cardinals defeated the Bobcats of Benton Community of Van Horne to begin the 2014 Newton Cardinals Hy-Vee Boys Soccer Tournament.

Later, the Cardinals dropped a 2-0 decision to Mid-Prairie’s Golden Hawks of Wellman in the the tournament championship game. Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs dropped a 3-0 decision to Mid-Prairie in the tournament’s second game, then lost 6-1 in the third-place contest to Benton.

Senior Nathan Moorman scored both of the Cardinal goals against Benton Community. The Cardinals led 1-0 at halftime. Griffin Engel, a sophomore, was the goalkeeper for Newton in the contest.
