Newton wins rugby opener at home Friday

NEWTON — With the game tied at 21-21 and less than a minute remaining in the contest, Newton’s Cardinals went on the attack here Friday night. The Cardinal rugby club opened its 2014 season at home at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

Jacob B. Smith broke loose and raced down field for the winning try as the final seconds ticked off. The Cardinals beat Van Meter, 28-21.

Newton got its first points on a try by Ray Schroder. Jake Huizenga had two long runs for scores.

Newton also beat Boone, 28-21, later Friday night.

The Cardinals hosted several teams of the  Iowa Youth Rugby Association including Ankeny, Des Moines Roosevelt, Des Moines Lincoln, West Des Moines Dowling, Des Moines Hoover.
