David L. Rowray

David L. Rowray, 71, of Newton died on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Skiff Medical Center.

A funeral service was held at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dave’s name may be left at the funeral home.

David, the son of David H. and Ardith (Bouveia) Rowray, was born on Nov. 8, 1942 in Waverly, Iowa. He grew up in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School where he was an avid athlete. He then received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.  After completing his student teaching, David served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  In 1970, David moved to Newton, Iowa, and was a teacher and coach at the Newton Senior High School.   While teaching he continued his own education and received his master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State. David retired from the Newton Community School District in 2003.  He was a devoted family man and loved his kids and grandkids and also was a dedicated teacher and coach. In retirement, David enjoyed golfing and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Those left to honor David’s memory are his two daughters, Jennifer Lasagna of Dallas, Texas; Alyson (Mike) Morrison of Urbandale; his five grandchildren, Jake, Joseph and Bodie Morrison and Olivia and Sofia Lasagna; two step-grandchildren, Brandon and Cameron Wickliff; and his siblings, Richard Rowray of Coralville and Lavonne (Bill) Blair, Sr. of Coralville. He was preceded in death by his father, David H. Rowray; mother, Ardith Rowray; and step-mother, Alberta Rowray.
