Cardinal teams compete in LHC indoor meet

GRINNELL — There were six varsity field events — three for girls and three for boys — at Friday’s Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor Track Meet. Newton won two of those events.

Jarom Williams had the longest leap into the sand pit for the boys’ varsity long jump. He won the event with a distance of 20 feet, 5 inches.

The Cardinal girls went 1-2 in the varsity shot put event. Michaela Bleeker and Sarah Kalkhoff had the top throws in the field by more than four feet. Bleeker won the event at 37’1” and Kalkhoff took second at 36’7”.

Deonne Harris pulled ahead of the field in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the race in 8.28 seconds. Brandon Fisher was 11th in the event in 11.05 seconds.

On the 200-meter indoor track at Grinnell College, Newton’s Sydney Jenkins claimed the lead in the girls’ 400-meter race on the second lap and stayed there. Jenkins won in 1 minute, 2.73 seconds. Jenkins placed second in the 200-meter dash in 27.82 seconds with Taylor Fisher in seventh at 30.89.

Grace Coen won the 800-meter run in 2:21.84 for Newton. Annie Hurt was ninth in 3:11.02. Newton’s Jacob Thomas placed third in the boys’ 800 meters in 2:15.38 and Sean Cook was sixth in 2:24.58.

Jacob Walker was fourth in the 400-meter race in 55.13 seconds and Williams was sixth in 57.30. Williams ran fourth in the 200-meter dash in 25.51 seconds and Walker placed sixth in 25.83.

In the 4x60-meter shuttle hurdle relay, the Cardinal boys had a little trouble and finished seventh in 42.66 seconds. Fisher, Reese Rosenquist, Levi Michener and Harris ran the race.

The Newton girls’ 4x60-meter shuttle hurdle relay team of Anna Barr, Bailey Zaruba, Brenna Schwenker and Fran Lucas came in fifth in 44.65 seconds.

J.T. Thongvanh placed fifth in the 60-meter dash in 7.52 seconds and Michener was 12th in 8.04. Michener combined with Rosenquist, Earl Kimmel and Cook for fifth place in the distance medley relay in 4:08.81.

The NHS boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Fisher, Walker, Williams and Harris posted a time of 3:56.34 for fourth place. The 4x800-meter relay team of Zach Theis, Thomas, Justin Simms and Cook was seventh in 9:27.19.

Simms ran 12th in the 1,600-meter race in 5:36.44 and Theis was 14th in 5:37.25. Ray Schroder placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 34’7”.

Newton’s girls claimed second in the distance medley relay race. Kacy Cazett, Alex Hutchinson, Taylor Fisher, and Coen combined for a time of 4:32. Cazett combined with Amber Karsten, Hutchinson and Taylor Fisher to place third in the 4x200-meter relay in 1:52.95.

Jenkins, Hailey Coy, Barr and Karsten finished the meet with a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay race in 4:25.87. Coy, Autumn Hunt, Kaelee Knoll and Annie Hurt placed fifth in the first relay race of the night — the 4x800 — in 11:51.87.

“I was pleased with our meet performances. It is great to see their hard work in competition,” Newton girls’ head coach Rachel Tomas said. “We definitely have more work and growth to go to accomplish our goals for the year, but we have started off well.”

Barr placed eighth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4’6”. Zaruba finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdle race in 11.12 and Taylor Graff was 13th in 12.11. In the 60-meter dash, Elise Axtell placed 10th in 9.48 seconds and Bridgett Carson was 12th in 9.60. Halie Doland ran the 1,500 meters in 6:47.54.

IN JV ACTION —

The Newton girls finished first and third in the shot put. Madison Bagnall’s throw of 30’4’ won the event and Sydney Bergman had a throw of 27’2” for third place. Molly Davros finished second in the 60-meter dash in 9.25 seconds and Schwenker was fourth in the  60-meter hurdles in 11.92 seconds.

Also for the NHS girls, the foursome of Axtell, Lucas, Davros and Carson was third in the 4x200-meter race in 2:09.37. Hunt, Marianna Ulrey, Knoll and Sarah Prendergast placed fourth in the 4x400 race in 5:26.48. Brooklynn Maddison was seventh in the 800-meter run in 3:17.89. Doland, Prendergast, Maddison and Ulrey ran the 4x800 in 12:57.71.

Collin Jacobsen ran seventh for the Newton boys in the junior varsity 60-meter dash in 9.73 seconds. Jacobsen combined with Jason Wu, Noah Kimmel and Theis for sixth in the 4x200-meter relay in 2:04.

Noah Kimmel finished seventh in the 800 meters in 3:24.75 and Devon Wolf was eighth in 4:03.96. Noah Kimmel, Earl Kimmel, Wu and Simms combined for eighth in the 4x400-meter relay race in 4:47.91.
