Blue Devils ground Hawks in 1A playoffs

PLEASANTVILLE — It was looking good for Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks Tuesday night. The  Hawk boys had a strong beginning to their Class 1A District 11 semifinal game at Pleasantville.

The Hawks saw a 28-21 halftime lead disappear against Martensdale-St. Marys’ Blue Devils. Martensdale-St. Marys picked up steam coming out of the break, outscoring Lynnville-Sully, 43-15, in the second half.

The Blue Devils derailed the Hawks’ plan of moving into the district championship game. Martensdale-St. Marys ousted the Hawks from postseason play, 64-43.

“We got off to a pretty good start. We let them gain a little momentum in the second quarter and had a hard time slowing them up in the second half,” Hawk head coach Nick Harthoorn said.

“The guys had a great year. I really enjoyed coaching this group. I am proud of what TJ Cunningham and Darin Hofer were able to accomplish as part of this program.”

Cunningham and Hofer are the Hawks’ two seniors. Cunningham went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line and led the Hawks with 12 points. Cunningham also had five rebounds and a three assists. Hofer pulled down seven rebounds and scored five points.

Lynnville-Sully was up 12-7 by the end of the first quarter. The pace of the game increased in the second period with the Hawks holding a 16-14 scoring edge for the seven-point lead at the break.

The Blue Devils, who shot 49 percent, 21-of-43, from the field for the game, had the firepower in the second half. They also shut down the Hawks, who finished the game shooting 30 percent, 16-of-54.

Martensdale-St. Marys surged ahead on a 19-6 run in the third quarter. The Blue Devils rolled to victory on a 24-9 scoring edge in the final eight minutes. A big factor was free throw shooting. The Blue Devils cashed in on 16-of-22 attempts while the Hawks went 6-of-8.

Luke Anctil hit four 3-pointers and sank 8-of-11 free throw attempts for the Blue Devils. Anctil finished with 24 points. Connor Dunn added 14 and Kraber Eddy scored 13 for the 17-6 Blue Devils.

Lynnville-Sully ended the 2013-14 season at 18-5.
