All five Newton wrestlers move on at state

DES MOINES — All of Newton Senior High School’s five qualified wrestlers made it through to the second day of action at the 2014 Iowa Class 3A State Wrestling Tournament.

Senior Ray Schroder and junior Dakota Dawson were first-round winners in their weight classes Thursday afternoon. Schroder defeated Jake Taylor of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, 6-1, at 195 pounds. Dawson pinned Andy Dougherty of Western Dubuque right at the end of the first period of their 138-pound match.

Schroder and Dawson wrestle in Class 3A quarterfinals Friday morning at Wells Fargo Arena.

Senior Joey Wright, sophomore Hunter Versteegh and junior J.T. Thongvanh lost their first match but stayed in contention winning in the first round of consolation matches Thursday. Wright at 220 won by a pin, Versteegh at 113 and Thongvanh at 170 each won by major decisions.

More on opening day action for Newton plus Colfax-Mingo’s Brett Stevens, Lynnville-Sully’s Caden Doll and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s Dawson Dahlke, all seniors, from Thursday night’s Class 1A action will be in Friday’s Newton Daily News.

Weather conditions prevented the Daily News from reaching the afternoon and evening sessions on the first day of the state tournaments for photographs of the area wrestlers.
