NEWTON — Newton’s boys swept the junior varsity and freshman games Monday at home against Winterset. The Cardinal boys split contests at Pella last Thursday.
The Cardinal junior varsity control its game against Winterset from the outset, leading 33-29 at halftime. They used strong rebounding in the second half to fuel a 66-42 win to improve to 9-9 on the season.
Zakk Weatherly had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals. Drew Stout led the scoring with 12 points. Jwan Roush added 11 points.
Newton’s freshmen outlasted Winterset, 39-35, as they moved to 12-7 on the season. The Cardinals were up 20-16 at halftime. Morgan Maher fired in 15 points while Josh Ventling scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
Last Thursday, the Cardinal freshmen won, 69-66 in overtime, at Pella. They hit 21-of-23 free throw attempts in the second half. Newton led 26-21 at the break, but the Little Dutch forged a 56-56 tie by the end of regulation.
Maher tossed in 21 points for the Newton. Ventling chipped in 20 points.
Pella won the junior varsity game, 58-32, with Newton. Pella hit seven of its 10 3-pointers in the first half.
Roush was the leading scorer for Newton with nine points. Weatherly controlled seven rebounds.
Newton’s junior varsity and freshman wrap up their season Thursday at Carlisle.
