Mustangs hold off Raiders in finale

BAXTER — Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs bolted to a 40-26 halftime lead on their hosts, the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter Raiders Friday night. The Raiders rallied for a second-half challenge.

Brady Stover hit a 3-pointer at 4:31 remaining in the game to pull CMB to within five points, 58-53. The Raiders didn’t score again for three minutes while PCM poured in eight points to power it to a 71-59 win.

The Mustangs secured second place in the Heart of Iowa Conference with the win, going 15-3 in conference play. They are 17-4 overall. The Raiders finished fourth in the HOIC at 11-7 and 15-7 overall.

CMB played three games last week, going 1-2. The Raiders lost at Roland-Story, 64-53, in conference play Tuesday then claimed a 59-39 non-conference win at Woodward-Granger Thursday.

PCM beat host Nevada, 48-47, in HOIC play Tuesday.

The two area teams garnered first-round byes in their respective playoff districts. PCM hosts the winner of tonight’s game between Pella Christian and Cardinal of Eldon in Class 2A District 12 action Thursday. CMB hosts the winner of South Hardin and East Marshall on Thursday in Class 2A District 13 play.

PCM was paced by Logan Gilman, who hit three of the team’s eight 3-pointers, with 20 points. Dillon Bruxvoort had 18 points and Ryan Jennings added 13. The Mustangs shot 56 percent, 27-of-48, from the field and downed 9-of-15 free throws.

Bruxvoort grabbed seven rebounds and made three steals. Devon Woody had two steals. Dishing out three assists apiece were Trey Lindsay, Jennings, Bruxvoort and Gilman.

The Raiders’ Seth Balke was hampered with early foul trouble, picking up two in the first quarter. Balke was assessed with his third and fourth fouls in the third quarter and did not score in the game.

Bryce Kemp had a double-double for the Raiders with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Austin Moorman added 11 points. CMB went 18-of-42, 43 percent, from the field and cashed in on 16-of-20 free throw attempts.

Zach Samson controlled 10 rebounds plus had two steals and two assists for CMB. Moorman, Tommy Galloway and Kemp each had two assists.
