Loren J. ‘Ted’ Tedrow

A funeral mass for Loren J. “Ted” Tedrow of Newton will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with Father William Reynolds and Deacon Dan Goetz officiating.

Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements. A visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 17, at the church with a vigil service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being designated in Loren’s name.

Loren J. “Ted” Tedrow, 81, the son of Jess Edmund and Grace Vara (Brunson) Tedrow, was born Nov. 9, 1932, near North English, Iowa. He was a high school graduate, and had served his country as a Army Medic, during the Korean Conflict. He would return to live in Colfax, and later moved to the Newton area in 1958.

On March 2, 1957, Ted was united in marriage with Evelyn Mae Fields at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. To this union was born five children: Douglas, Michael, Brian, Robert “Bobby” and Renee. Ted was employed by the City of Newton Waterworks Department, where he started out as a meter reader and later retired as a Supervisor. He devoted his life to his family and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, football-showing up for Newton Cardinal football games four hours early. He enjoyed camping and fishing at Shady Hills near Tama, and later at his lake home on Lake Ponderosa. Ted was a kind and warm hearted man.

Ted died on Thursday morning, Feb. 13, 2014, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons in 1994, Douglas and Michael; four brothers; and three sisters.

Those left to honor Ted’s memory include his wife, Evelyn; his daughter, Renee Goeldner (Steve) of Newton; his sons, Brian Tedrow of Des Moines and Robert “Bobby” Tedrow of Newton; a best friend, Rick Umbarger; his two grandsons, Colton Umbarger and Ryan Tedrow; his brother, Thomas Tedrow (Angela) of Littleton, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
