STORY CITY — Pre-season goals are often a pipe dream. Coaches set goals that look good on paper but are sometimes unattainable.

That was not the case for Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustang wrestlers, who won a share of a Heart of Iowa title on Monday. PCM emerged victorious in each of its three duals, beating Eagle Grove, 57-27, R-S, 48-33, and Nevada, 63-9.

“This team has either met or came very close to meeting all of its goals from the beginning of the season,” PCM coach Cory Waddell said. “We wanted to compete for a dual meet conference title as well as the tournament championship. After coming 1.5 points short of the tournament championship, they fought hard and won 11 consecutive duals to close out the season, ending in a co-championship with Saydel.”

Mustang 113-pounder Xavier Miller got three victories on the night. Miller beat Nevada’s Evan Rix, 4-3, and pinned Eagle Grove’s Braden Cahalan and Roland-Story’s Dakota Rusher.

Trent Malone (285) pinned Eagle Grove’s Jonathan Mendoza and the Norsemen’s Jesus Dominquez-Rivera. Tristan Clark won at both the 126 and 132-pound weight classes. At 126, he pinned Eagle Grove’s Dalton Schaffer in 45 seconds, and at 132, he pinned Nevada’s Calvin Schneider in 10 seconds.

Jade Coleman (16) pinned each of his opponents. He took down Nevada’s Kody Harrelson, Eagle Grove’s Austin Burgwin and R-S’s Charles Fournier.

Ron Marshall (170) pinned both Ryan Hadaway from R-S and Mike Dicke from Eagle Grove. Lucas Rains (182) went 3-0 with pins over Nevada’s Trice Logdson and Eagle Grove’s Preston Jacobsen.

This was PCM’s last tuneup before the Mustangs head to Albia for sectional competition on Feb. 8, followed by the possibility of regionals on Feb. 11.

“Hopefully we are peaking at the right time as sectionals loom large this Saturday in Albia,” Waddell said. “We are as healthy as can be expected heading into the state tournament series, and I look forward to making some noise as we attempt to qualify for the regional duals.”
