Newton wrestling wins one, loses one

INDIANOLA — Dakota Dawson, Newton junior, broke into the top 10 rankings of Iowa Class 3A’s 138-pound wrestlers this week. Dawson is ranked 10th and he faced fifth-ranked senior Joe McGinnis of Indianola Thursday.

Newton’s Cardinals were at Indianola along with Des Moines Roosevelt in non-conference wrestling action. Indianola’s Indians have five ranked wrestlers in Class 3A while Newton has just Dawson. Seniors Koby Hull (106) and Ray Schroder (195) fell out of the rankings this week.

Dawson and McGinnis battled it out on the mat with the senior getting a 3-2 win for Indianola. Newton lost 43-22 to Indianola with competition on the mat in all 14 weight classes.

The Cardinals decked the Des Moines Roosevelt Roughriders, 57-16. Newton had four wins by forfeit at 113, 126, 182 and 220.

Four Cardinals went 2-0 on the night. Hull and Schroder are making bids to get back into the rankings at their respective weight classes.

Hull pinned Zach Fisher of Indianola in 38 seconds and recorded a 17-1 technical fall over DMR’s Carter Lee at the 2:42 mark of their 106 match. Schroder posted a 5-1 decision over Indianola’s Logan Hunt and pinned John Hawkins of DMR in 57 seconds.

At 220 for the Cardinals, Caden Manning had the quickest pin of the night. Manning took all of nine seconds to put Paul Luallin of Indianola to the mat. Manning won by forfeit against DMR.

Joey Wright pulled out a 2-1 decision of Kieran Mort of Indianola in the 285-pound match. Wright pinned DMR’s Sunday Deng in 48 seconds.

Dawson claimed a win on the night by pinning DMR’s Sam Grinstead in 51 seconds at 138.

Second-ranked John Gioffredi, Indianola senior, pinned Newton’s Alex Bentley in 1:53 at 126 and 10th-ranked Trevor Wharton, another senior, pinned Newton’s Jacob Fisher in 2:56 at 120. Fisher won by major decision, 13-1, over DMR’s Josh Hawkins and Bentley won by forfeit against the Roughriders.

Brett Wolf took on Indianola’s sixth-ranked Landon BeLieu at 145 and lost by a fall in 5:02. Duncan Lee was pinned by Indianola’s Casey Crawford in 3:15. Crawford is ranked eighth at 160.

The other win for the Cardinals against the Indians came in the 170-pound match. J.T. Thongvanh tallied a 15-7 major decision over Elijah Clutter. Thongvanh lost 6-3 to DMR’s Reggie Jones.

Bryce Tish went 1-1 on the night, getting a win by pinning Andrew Jones of DMR in 3:14 at 132. Hunter Versteegh also was 1-1 with a forfeit win against the Roughriders in the 113-pound class.

Earl Kimmel was 0-1 losing a 160-pound match against DMR. Wolf at 145 and Peyton Patterson at 152 were 0-2 on the night.

Newton goes to Norwalk Tuesday in a make-up Little Hawkeye Conference dual, postponed from Dec. 19. The Cardinals have a busy week with a LHC dual at Dallas Center-Grimes Thursday then the LHC tournament, Feb. 1, at Norwalk.
