NHS, PCM compete in ADM Tiger Invitational

ADEL — Of the 24 area wrestlers — 12 from Newton and 12 from Prairie City-Monroe — Newton junior Dakota Dawson was the only gold medalist at Saturday’s A-D-M Tiger Invitational. The tournament was hosted by Adel-DeSoto-Minburn.

Dawson was the lone Cardinal in a championship match, winning the 138-pound division. Dawson pinned Grant Brown of Waukee in 1 minute, 56 seconds in the title match.

PCM’s Mustangs had two wrestlers reach championship matches. At 113 pounds, Xavier Miller lost 15-6 to Waukee’s Zach Barnes. Lucas Rains also lost by a major decision, 20-4, to Dallas Center-Grimes’ Dakota Clausen in the 182-pound championship bout.

In a field of 17 teams, Newton tied with Audubon for sixth place with 121 points apiece. PCM was 10th with 112 points. Webster City won the team title with 215 points.

The Cardinals step back into Little Hawkeye Conference action Tuesday, hosting Grinnell. The Mustangs go on the road to Woodward-Granger Tuesday.

Newton and PCM each had five other wrestlers finish in the top seven in their respective weight classes at the Tiger Invitational.

The only time Newton and PCM faced each other in the tournament was in the opening round. Newton’s Koby Hull pinned PCM’s Chace Palm in 1:55 at 106. Palm was pinned by John Throne of A-D-M, 2:56, in consolation action to end his day.

Hull pinned Ben Carr of DCG in 3:36 then lost 9-4 to Jakob Allison of Waukee in the semifinals. Hull pinned Collin Subert of Audubon, 1:14, in the consolation bracket semifinal. He faced Carr of DCG again in the 106 third-place match, winning with a pin in 36 seconds.

Newton’s J.T. Thongvanh at 170 and Ray Schroder at 185 each placed fourth. Hunter Versteegh was seventh at 113 pounds and Cole Peters placed seventh at 120.

Ian Reed of PCM took fourth in the 145-pound division while Tristan Clark at 132 and Ron Marshall at 170 were fifth-place finishers. Luke Cummings placed sixth at 152 and Jade Coleman was seventh in the 160-pound class.

Dawson broke into the Cardinal varsity lineup following the holiday break. He is now 12-2 as Newton’s 138-pound wrestler. He opened Saturday’s tournament with a 47-second pin of Red Oak’s Lyndon Bright.

In his quarterfinal match, Dawson posted a 7-1 decision over Colton Osmundson of Roland-Story. Dawson pinned Webster City’s Ryan Ferrari right at the end of the first period, reaching the championship match.

PCM’s Miller pinned Alec Somsavath of Des Moines East in 2:22 of their opening-round match at 113 pounds. Miller rolled to a 15-2 major decision over Austin Smith of North Polk in the quarterfinals then defeated Evan Rix of Nevada, 8-4, in the semifinals.

Rains pinned Ethan Shipps of Ankeny Centennial in 50 seconds to begin his run to the 182-pound title match for PCM. Rains had back-to-back 3-2 decisions over Kaleb Sents of Ames and Julio Ramirez of Antioch in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.

In the 170-pound division, Newton’s Thongvanh won his first match, a pin of Dillon Hauser of Ankeny Centennial in 2:53, then was pinned by Connor Larson of Webster City in 2:16. PCM’s Marshall went the same route — a pin over Dillon Rogers of Waukee in 2:34 and got pinned in 1:27 by Blake Wolinski of DCG.

That dropped Thongvanh and Marshall into the consolation bracket. Marshall beat Zac Keller of Antioch, 10-3, but was pinned by Larson of Webster City in 27 seconds. Marshall moved into the fifth-place match, winning by injury default over Jacob Bair of Clarke. Thongvanh used a major decision, 12-3, over Markram Ibraheem of Des Moines East to move on then had injury default win over Bair. In the 170-pound third-place match, Larson edged Thongvanh 8-7.

PCM’s Reed opened strong in the 145-pound bracket with a pin of Antioch’s Jeremiah Reyes in 4:50. Reed was upended, 12-3, by Ames’ Marcus Coleman in the quarterfinal round. The two would meet again later. Reed beat Traye Pelzer of Nevada, 12-8, and Trevor Smith of Audubon, 7-6, to reach the third-place match. Coleman pinned Reed in 4:59.

Schroder of Newton notched an 8-3 decision over Keagan Hosfelt of Atlantic to begin his day at 195 pounds. Schroder pinned Austin Robbins of Des Moines East in 2:12, but lost 15-7 to John Ware of Ankeny Centennial in the semifinals. He got a major decision, 13-4, over Tanner Stille of Roland-Story to get to the third-place match. George Bessette of Antioch pinned Schroder in 52 seconds.

Newton’s Hunter Versteegh lost his opening match at 113 by fall in 2:52 to Trey Rouse of Ankeny Centennial. He went on to win five straight in the consolation bracket, including pinning Rouse in 2:53 for seventh place. Versteegh pinned Trey Nelson of Webster City, 2:15, and Conner Christensen of Ames, 2:49, and won by injury default over Austin Smith, North Polk.

At 120, Peters worked back to win the seventh-place match for Newton, a pin of Michael Casey of Ames in 1:41. Peters started with a pin of Beau Nickum of Audubon at the end of the second period, lost by technical fall (16-1) to Trevor Murano of DCG and was pinned by Nathan Dlugopolski of Antioch, 3:49. Peters won by technical fall (17-2) over Connor Canova, Ankeny Centennial, to get into the seventh-place match.

Clark, the Mustangs’ 132-pounder, was one of seven PCM wrestlers to win by pin in the opening round. Clark pinned Danny Collins of Waukee in 3:01. Clark dropped a major decision, 13-3, to Pat Schoenfelder of Antioch. He pinned Marshall McDermott of Atlantic in 1:43 then lost a 12-10 decision to Aaron Noce of Ankeny Centennial. Clark claimed fifth on an injury default over Jake Mulford of Audubon.

PCM’s Cummings was pinned in the 152-pound fifth-place match in 3:27 by Lucas Smith-Peterson of Audubon. He was 2-2 before that. Cummings pinned Nevada’s Cody Weier in 54 seconds to start the competition then was pinned in 1:24 by Tanner Hild of Webster City. Cummings bounced back with a 57-second pin of Antioch’s Stephen Frandsen in consolation-bracket action. Cummings lost 11-9 to Ben Joerger of Ames in overtime.

Coleman went 3-2 to claim seventh at 160 for the Mustangs. Coleman opened the day with a pin of Gable Reece of Clarke in 42 seconds and finished with a 12-0 major decision over Drew Christensen of Audubon. He lost 16-15 to Prince York of Des Moines East and 7-6 to Kody Harrelson of Nevada then defeated Jacob Johnson of Atlantic, 6-4.
