Newton girls fall to third-ranked Ballard

NEWTON — Newton’s Cardinals proved they can play with any team. The NHS girls played to within four points of the third-ranked team in Class 4A Friday night.

Unfortunately, following the break, the visiting Ballard Bombers cashed in on a rash of Cardinal miscues to gain a 37-24 lead in the first three minutes of the third quarter. The Cardinals weren’t able to recover, losing 57-41.

“We came out and played well, but for whatever reason, we came out flat in the second half. You can’t do that against a good team like Ballard,” Newton girls’ head coach Brandon Sharp said. “We made 14 of our 25 turnovers in the second half. We have to take care of the basketball better.”

Newton led 16-11 with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Ballard responded with five straight points to forge a 16-16 tie. The Bombers pushed out to a 25-16 lead but back came the Cardinals on back-to-back baskets by Shelby Gray. It was 28-24 at halftime.

Gray finished with 10 points for Newton. Michaela Jacobsen fired in 15 points.

Ballard got 22 points from Emily Knittel and 17 points from Gabie Doud. Jenna Moody hit for 13 points.

Newton fell to 2-7 on the season. The Cardinals step back into Little Hawkeye Conference play Tuesday at home against Dallas Center-Grimes.

Newton boys' comeback falls short

BONDURANT — Newton's boys basketball team went into the break preaching inside toughness and defense as the two thing that needed the most improvement. After taking a loss at Bondurant-Farrar on Friday night, those two things are still a concern.

Newton lost to the Bluejays, 76-66.

The Bluejays pounded the ball inside on the Cardinals, scoring bucket after bucket in the paint. Most of the inside scoring came towards the start of the second half, with Bluejay senior center Sam Duffy picking up 18 points.

B-F Junior Tyvin Riley and senior Drake Fuller poured in 19 points each to lead the Bluejays.

Newton played the Bluejays tight throughout the first half, trailing by just one point going into halfitme. The Cards had some trouble coming out of the break and fell behind by 18 points with two minutes left in the third quarter.

The Cards seemed destined for a blowout, when they mounted a comeback attempt on the back on junior Tyler Wood. Wood nailed a contested 3-pointer early in the fourth to pull Newton within eight. He soon knocked down another shot from long distance off a screen, closing the gap to three. Down, 66-61, freshman Connor Gholson missed a 3-pointer, which was rebounded by Wood and promptly put back for a bucket and a foul to pull Newton within one.

B-F was able to hold on, though, sinking free throws in the final minutes to pull awa for the win. Wood finished with 27 points, and Newton is now 3-5 on the season.
