• Darlene B. Annee, 77, of Newton was cited with following too close after authorities responded to a two-vehicle accident at 11:52 a.m. Dec. 16. Annee was traveling east in the inside lane in the 1700 block of First Avenue East when she struck the rear of a vehicle ahead of her driven by 31-year-old Grinnell resident Crystal D. Kriegel, who had slowed to turn into The Shoe Dept. parking lot. Annee was transported to Skiff Medical Center by Newton paramedics to be treated for her injuries. Her vehicle sustained an estimated $6,000 damage and Kriegel’s an estimated $4,500 damage.

• Jacob A. Chamberlin, 18, of Newton was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities responded to a complaint of a domestic assault at 5:20 p.m. Dec. 19 at 407 E. 12th St. S. in Newton. The suspect had left on foot with another male, and they were located in the 100 block of East 11th Street South. Chamberlin consented to a search and was found with a small metal pipe in his pocket. He admitted it was a broken marijuana pipe and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Troy J. Harter, 27, of Newton was charged with operating while intoxicated, second offense, after authorities stopped him at 2:30 a.m. Dec. 18 for having an inoperable brake light. He failed sobriety tests and registered a .128 BAC on the data master test. He was charged and released to appear in court.

• Michael J. Hesse-Walker, 17, of Newton was charged with possession of alcohol under age and fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a shoplifting complaint at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Walmart. He was charged for allegedly attempting to leave the store with two bottles of Jack Daniels, valued at $98.48, without paying. He was referred to juvenile court services.

• Carla J. Johnson, 52, of Newton was cited with failure to yield from a stop sign after authorities responded to a two-vehicle accident at 3:05 p.m. Monday. Johnson was traveling south on East Second Street South, stopped at the stop sign at South Fifth Avenue East, proceeded into the intersection and collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by 47-year-old Newton resident John A. Mudra, who had the right of way. The vehicles sustained an estimated $1,000 damage each.

• Theodore B. Johnson, 28, of Newton was arrested at 2:22 p.m. Monday at 2412 S. Third Ave. E. on a Polk County warrant for escape and drug charges and a Jasper County warrant for probation violation and drug charges. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Joseph P. McNamara, 59, of Newton was cited with failure to maintain control after authorities responded to a two-vehicle accident at 3:16 p.m. Monday. McNamara was traveling east on First Avenue and approaching the intersection of East Second Street when he struck the rear of a vehicle driven by 55-year-old Newton resident Brenda D. Miller, who was stopped at a red light. There was packed snow on the roadway at the time of the accident. McNamara’s vehicle sustained an estimated $800 damage and Miller’s an estimated $300 damage.

• Nicholas J. McAlister, 23, of Newton was charged with driving while license barred and following too close after authorities responded to a three-vehicle accident at 9:51 a.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of First Avenue East. McAlister was traveling west when he struck the rear of a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Newton resident Aaron Michael Hartson, whose vehicle with then pushed into a vehicle ahead of him driven by Michael L. Kaldenberg, 62, of Newton. McAlister’s vehicle sustained an estimated $2,000 damage, Hartson’s an estimated $1,800 damage and Kaldenberg’s an estimated $200 damage.

• Denise N. Meyer, 38, of Newton was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped her at 7:37 p.m. Dec. 11 in the 600 block of East Seventh Street North and determined her license had been suspended. Due to computer issues, she was not charged until Monday and was released to appear in court.

• Donna M. Pangallo, 53, of Des Moines was charged with unlawful possession of a prescription after authorities received a complaint at 6:16 p.m. Dec. 18 of a driver swerving and driving with her four-way blinkers on. She was stopped in the 1600 block of Highway 14 South. Pangallo had slow speech admitted she had medication. She provided officers with a prescription bottle without a label, and the pills were identified as Clindamycin. Pangallo did not have a prescription for the pills and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Dani R. Rogers, 38, of Newton was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped her at 1:59 a.m. Thursday in the 300 block of East Third Street South. Officers knew the registered driver of the vehicle had a suspended license. Rogers, who was not the registered owner, also was found to have a suspended license, and she was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• David L. Smith, 57, of Newton was charged with driving while license revoked after authorities stopped him at 11:47 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of East Eighth Street North for having an inoperable brake light. He was charged for driving with a revoked license, given a warning for the light and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Shawn N. Stevens, 33, of Newton was charged with simple domestic assault after authorities responded to a domestic fight at 9:01 p.m. Sunday at 538 W. Ninth St. N. in Newton. He was charged for allegedly pulling the victim down the hall by her hair and choking her. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Lindee A. Thenhaus, 30, of Newton was cited with unsafe backing onto highway after authorities responded to a two-vehicle accident at 6:20 p.m. Sunday at 322 E. 11th St. N. in Newton. Thenhaus was backing out of a driveway when she struck a parked vehicle owned by Philip T. Peden, 38, of Newton, causing an estimated $300 damage to his vehicle and $10 damage to her own.

• Chad E. Veach, 32, of Newton was arrested at 7:13 p.m. Saturday at 800 S. Second Ave. W. on a warrant for probation violation on an original charge of possession of marijuana. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Alion White, 29, of Newton was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped him at 8:46 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of North Fourth Avenue West for having an inoperable headlight. He was charged for driving with a suspended license, given a warning for the light and released to appear in court.

• A 15-year-old Newton female was charged with serious assault after an officer was notified of an assault at 11:47 a.m. Dec. 16 at Newton Senior High School. She was charged for allegedly punching another student in the face and biting his arm after he accidently hit her in the face with a ball. She was referred to juvenile court services.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
