Letha M. Schakel

Letha M. Schakel, 104, of Monroe died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at West Ridge Nursing & Health Center in Knoxville. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27 at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe. The family will greet friends following the service at the First Baptist Church in Monroe for a coffee time. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The daughter of John and Flora Jane (Woody) Kinart, Letha was born Nov. 25, 1909, in rural Monroe. Letha graduated from Monroe High School in 1928. On Nov. 28, 1929, she was united in marriage to Paul M. Schakel at the parsonage of the First Baptist Church in Monroe. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a member of the TMTM Neighbor Club.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Jane (Gerrit) Renaud and Russell (Beverly) Schakel, both of Monroe; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. 

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband in 2000; an infant daughter, Baneta; a son, LaVern; sister Sarah Beyer; brother Doyal Kinart; and a son-in-law, DeVerne Schippers.
