PELLA — Newton’s Cardinals had just lost four matches in a row by pins, falling behind host Pella, 24-21, in Tuesday’s Little Hawkeye Conference wrestling dual. The Cardinals needed a jolt to get started again.
The jolt came from freshman Peyton Patterson, who captured his first varsity win by pinning Pella’s Stoya Kirby at the 5:07 mark of their 160-pound match. Patterson’s victory pushed Newton to a 27-24 lead. They never trailed again, winning 50-30.
“Peyton got two varsity wins tonight. They both were big for us as a team in the two duals,” said Andy Swedenhjelm, NHS head wrestling coach. “We weren’t at our full strength tonight with injuries. We had four wrestlers making their varsity debuts.”
With the win over Pella, the Cardinals are 2-0 in Little Hawkeye wrestling duals. They dropped a 38-33 decision to Carlisle in a non-conference dual Tuesday. Newton is 3-2 in duals this season.
Newton travels to Norwalk Thursday in conference action. The Cardinal varsity goes to the Fort Dodge Invitational Saturday while the junior varsity heads to the North Polk Invitational.
A pin by Koby Hull over Ethan Spletz in the 106 match and Cole Peters winning 6-0 over Zine Stough at 126 helped Newton stake out a 21-0 lead over Pella. Jonathon Lawton and Parker Schuster won by forfeit at 113 and 120 for Newton.
The Little Dutch won the next four matches — 132, 138, 145, 152 — with pins. After Patterson righted the Cardinal ship, Sean Cook put the wind in the sails with a pin of Tate Petty in 3 minutes, 25 seconds in the 170-pound match, pushing Newton to a 33-24 lead.
Pella’s Ashton Messer pinned Cole Doerring in 2:24 at 182. It was the last win for the Little Dutch.
Newton’s Ray Schroder scored a technical fall (18-3) over Keegan Poole at the 5:43 mark of their 195-pound match. Moving into the 220-pound spot for the night was Jordan Henning, who boosted the Cardinal lead with a pin of Carter Terpstra in 3:45. Joey Wright moved into the 285-pound matches and won by forfeit to wrap up the win for Newton.
The dual with Carlisle shifted back-and-forth early, forging a 12-12 tie. After dropping the first two matches by pins, the Cardinals came right back. Brett Wolf pinned Brenden Smith in 28 seconds at 152 then Patterson recorded a pin of Orrey Reed at the 4:45 mark at 160.
The Wildcats won the 170 and 182 matches by falls to take a 24-12 lead. Schroder defeated Andrew Hill 10-4 for three team points. Down 30-15, Newton got a pin from Wright against Luke Oja in 41 seconds in the 285-pound match.
Carlisle expanded its lead to 38-21. Newton had a chance to win, if it came up with three straight pins. The Cardinals won the last three matches but only scored 12 points for the team, coming up five points short of the Wildcats.
Schuster pinned Jeremy Boothroyd in 32 seconds at 120. Peters outscored Brandon Avilla, 16-10, in the 126-pound match. Smith notched a 5-1 decision over Kenny McCaughey at 132.
“We saw a lot of positive things tonight. We just have to get healthy. The guys who stepped in wrestled well. It’s always good to win a conference dual. We came close against Carlisle,” Swedenhjelm said.
