Newton, area girls’ basketball teams tip off season Friday

Girls get a jump on the boys for high school winter sports.

Area girls’ basketball teams tip off the 2013-14 season Friday. Five the area girls’ teams play games on Friday with games slated on Monday and Tuesday.

Newton’s Cardinals host the 2013 Hy-Vee Holliday Tournament Friday and Saturday. Des Moines Christian plays Bondurant-Farrar at 5 p.m. followed by Newton taking on Carlisle at 7 p.m. at NHS.

Friday night’s winning teams square off for the tournament championship at 5 p.m. Saturday. The losing teams play at 3 p.m. in the consolation game. Following the championship contest, the all=tournament team will be announced and a three-point shooting contest is scheduled.

Admission to the tournament is $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Also on Friday, Prairie City-Monroe’s girls play at Knoxville, Collins-Maxwell-Baxter hosts Woodward-Granger, Lynnville-Sully opens at home against English Valleys and Pella Christian hosts Martensdale-St. Mary’s.

Newton plays its third game in four days on Monday at home against Perry.

Colfax-Mingo’s girls open the season Tuesday at Gilbert. PCM goes to Nevada Tuesday while CMB is at Roland-Story, Lynnville-Sully is at Sigourney and  Pella Christian hosts Albia.

Newton’s boys open the 2013-14 swim season Tuesday. The Cardinals are on the road at Southeast Polk.

After Thanksgiving break, the area boys’ basketball teams, wrestling teams and the boys’ and girls’ bowling teams from Newton and Pella Christian join the fray of competition.

WINTER SPORTS PREVIEWS for all teams will appear in the Daily News on Nov. 27 and Nov. 29. Previews on teams from Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter, Lynnville-Sully and Pella Christian will be in the Nov. 27 edition. Newton teams and Prairie City-Monroe teams will be in the Nov. 29 Daily News.
