Newton Police Department

• Timothy J. Ford, 26, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a theft report at 2:03 p.m. Nov. 4 at Walmart. A loss prevention employee informed police she observed Ford taking DVDs out of the cases and attempting to walk out the store with them. The total value of the three DVDs was $37.88. Ford was charged and released to appear in court.

• Chase A. McCartney, 21, of Newton was charged with possession of marijuana after an ambulance and police were dispatched at 6:19 p.m. Nov. 5 to 204 N. Second Ave. E. in reference to a pedestrian being hit by a truck. McCartney was transported to Skiff Medical Center, where EMS personnel observed him removing a bag containing a green leafy substance from his pocket and then putting it back in his pocket. Police were notified, and McCartney consented to a search. The substance weighed 5.6 grams and tested positive for marijuana. He was charged and released to appear in court. The driver of the vehicle, Andre L. Versendaal, 29, of Grinnell, was not cited in the accident. Versendaal had been traveling east on First Avenue East behind another vehicle when the accident occurred. The roadway was not lit, and it was raining. Versendaal swerved to avoid hitting McCartney but struck him with the right front bumper, causing an estimated $150 damage to the vehicle and breaking a headlight.

• Lisa M. Osborn, 41, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a theft complaint at 10:21 a.m. Nov. 4 at Walmart. Loss prevention employees informed police they observed Osborn loading a 29-gallon fish tank into her cart, pushing her cart to the self-checkout line and purchasing two items without paying for the fish tank. The value of the tank was $106.98. Osborn was charged and released to appear in court.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• Casey W. Edwards, 19, and Roderick C. Gainey, 23, both of Monroe, were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at 9:53 p.m. Oct. 29 in the 6800 block of Highway 14 South. Authorities detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a search, two glass pipes were found behind the center console. Both men were charged and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Eighteen-year-old Kylar J. Schwabe, 20-year-old Matthew K. Lisk and 16-year-old Kenneth M. Landgrebe, all of Newton, were charged with third-degree criminal mischief and criminal trespass after authorities responded to an incident reported at 12:45 p.m. Thursday at 2551 E. 76th St. N. The three were caught on the unoccupied property by the landowner and were charged for allegedly removing copper wire from a grain bin. The total damage to the bin exceeded $500.

• Tyler Sutton, 18, Newton was served a warrant at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 5 while already in the Jasper County Jail on another charge. The warrant was for a theft charge.

• Kirkland Tomkins, 33, of Des Moines was arrested on a Jasper County warrant in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 5. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
