Seniors have strong finale for Hawks

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks had their 2013 football season halted Monday in the second round of the Iowa Class A playoffs. They lost 35-7 to BGM’s Bears (11-0) in Brooklyn.

Senior Daniel Zimmerman led the rushing attack for the Hawks in Monday’s game. Zimmerman gained 52 yards on 14 carries. Senior Bailee Samson had 30 yards on six carries and senior Caden Doll finished with 17 yards on 16 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Sage Ehresman went 8-of-19 passing for 43 yards, throwing a nine-yard touchdown pass to Doll and three interceptions. Senior tight end Darin Hofer completed one pass for 10 yards plus caught two passes for 10 yards.

Brandon Dunsbergen, senior wide receiver, made one reception for 10 yards. Samson caught four passes for 17 yards and Doll had two catches for 16 yards.

Senior linebackers Payton Scandridge and Doll each recorded six tackles. Junior Blake Wehrle had five tackles while Hofer made four. Zimmerman, senior T.J. Cunningham and senior Kyle Hamilton each had three tackles.

Samson and Scandridge each recovered a fumble for the Hawks. Sophomore Noah Engle punted twice for a total of 70 yards.

The Hawks finished 6-5 after losing their first four games of the season.

Monday’s game was the final one for 13 Lynnville-Sully seniors. They were Meliek Meyer, Cunningham, B. Dunsbergen, Zimmerman, Doll, Samson, Zack Kaldenberg, Scandridge, Thane Redding, Hamilton, Lucas Rozendaal, Hofer and Payton Haack. Haack missed the entire season because of a knee injury suffered over the summer.

“Payton was a big part of this team. It was tough for him not being out on the field this season. He is a hard-working young man, who had been a part of our team from the beginning,” said Hawk head coach Mike Parkinson. Haack was on the sideline in a wheelchair because of the surgery on his knee.
