MARSHALLTOWN — Newton’s boys ran tough in the cold, windy weather, but did not place any runners in the top 10 at Thursday’s Class 4A regional cross country meet run on the Marshalltown Community College cross country course.

Junior Christian Laube was the Cardinals’ top finisher on the day, running the 5K race in 17 minutes, 11 seconds. That put him in 24th. The top three teams and top 10 individual runners qualify for the 4A state meet Nov. 2 in Fort Dodge.

Jacob Thomas, a junior, placed 32nd in 17:33 as the Cardinals’ No. 2 runner on the day. Sophomore Chase Dykstra battled down the final stretch to finish 51st in 18:41 and freshman Justin Fischer was 52nd in 18:44.

The junior trio of Justin Simms, Jacob Arrowood and Grant Osborn went 54-57-58. Simms ran the race in 18:48 with Arrowood posting a 19:18 and Osborn crossing in 19:20.
