PANORA — Running on a “true” cross country course, Pella Christian’s Eagle athletes come up a bit short in qualifying for the Class 2A state cross country competition.

“We thought we were heading to a golf course to run, but we actually endd up running next to it instead, for the most part. We had good weather to run in and the course had the athletes running in the woods and on some rough,” said Jocelyn Meinders, Pella Christian head coach.

“I was proud of the our athletes. We had some good performances by both the girls and boys. The team is already looking to next year. We had a lot of new runners this year who have gained a year of experience.”

The Eagle boys finished sixth as a team. Jacob Lensing led the way, placing 22nd in running the 5K course in 18 minutes, 46 seconds. Grant Dunsbergen was 32nd in 19:13. Then came Jonathan Beltman and Scott Haveman in 51st and 53rd, respectively, in 20:05 and 20:08.

Max Shannon finished the race in 20:41 for 62nd, edging out teammate Samuel Dahm, who ran 20:42 for 63rd. Jackson Schelhaas placed 71st in 21:08.

Marina Shannon paced the Eagle girls, who finished 10th as a team. Shannon was 33rd in 18:17 for the 4K race. Andreea Carballo placed 43rd in 18:56, followed by Morgan Anderson in 47th at 19:11, Damaris Worthingon in 52nd at 19:18 and Abby Van Soelen in 64th at 20:47.
