Hawks, Eagles open regional play with wins

Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks and Pella Christian’s Eagles swoped up first-round region volleyball tournament victories Tuesday night.

The Hawks were in Tama, playing Meskwaki Settlement in Class 1A, Region 6 tournament play. Lynnville-Sully defeated Meskwaki Settlement, 25-14, 25-13, 25-12. The Hawks (10-14) play at Belle Plaine next Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

The Eagles were at home in Pella Tuesday. They dispatched Cardinal-Eldon, 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 in Class 2A, Region 4 tournament play. Pella Christian (19-15) head to Eddyville next Tuesday to play Eddyville-Blakesburg in quarterfinal action.

Lynnville-Sully got 11 kills from senior Cassie Cullen and she had two solo blocks at the net. Senior setter Jade Van Rees was credited with 26 set assists, plus she was 18- of-19 at the service line with four aces.

Junior Lysandra James delivered six kills at the net and served up five aces. Kristen Van Der Witt had four kills, while senior Macy Lanser, junior Taylor Vander Leest and Freshman Brenna Lanser each had two kills.

Macy Lanser went 10-of-12 serving with two aces serves. Vander Leest was 11-of-12 with one ace serve while senior Kristal Beyer was 10-of-10 serving with one ace serve. Cullen served up an ace.

Macy Lanser was credited with 15 digs on the night for Lynnville-Sully. Cullen made eight digs and Vander Leest had seven. Beyer, Van Rees and senior Lyndsay Terpstra each came up with six digs.

Pella Christian’s senior Lauren Jungling put up 28 set assists and went 13-of-14 serving the volleyball with four aces. Junior Abby Pleima had a tremendous night at the serving line, 24-of-24 and three ace serves. Juniro Alyssa Starkey had one ace serve.

At the net, junior Hannah Beltman pounded down nine kills and had one solo block. Becca Gritters, a junior, had eight kills and a block assist. Senior Logan De Graaf hit seven kills while junior Christa Veenstra had five kills and a block assist.

Jungling had four kills. Starkey and junior Laura Nicholson each had one kill. Starkey was credited with 12 digs to lead the Eagles, followed by Pleima with nine and Jungling with four digs.
