Susan Duncan Stevens

Susan Duncan Stevens, 51, of Altoona and formerly of Newton, died on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be directed to the Susan Stevens Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home.

Susan was born on Aug. 2, 1962, in Grinnell, Iowa, to John and Bonnie Parmley Duncan. She was raised in Grinnell and attended Grinnell schools. Following the deaths of her parents she moved to Urbandale and lived with her brother, Brian. She graduated from Urbandale High School with the Class of 1980 and later attended Iowa State University. After her education she worked for General Telephone Company in Grinnell. She recently retired from Windstream Telecommunications Company as a telephone directory editor.

She was married to Chuck Stevens in 1996 at the Botanical Center in Des Moines and the couple lived in Newton and recently moved to Altoona.

Susan enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping and canoeing, attending auto racing events in Newton and Knoxville and spending time with her grandchildren. She was also an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan.

Survivors include her husband, Chuck Stevens of Altoona; one daughter, Stephanie (Christopher) Watrous of Polk City; two sons, Shane Michael Stevens of Tucson, Ariz., and Spencer Stevens of San Diego, Calif.; two grandsons, Carter and Parker Watrous; and two brothers, Brian (Patty) Duncan of Elkhorn, Neb., and Cal Duncan of San Diego, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, John Neal Duncan II.
