NPD distributing trick-or-treat bags

The Newton Police Department, 101 W. Fourth St. S., is distributing free Safety Pup trick-or-treat bags from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Oct. 29.

The bright colored bags will be distributed along with a pamphlet containing safety tips for a fun and safe Halloween. Trick-or-treaters are reminded to follow Safety Pups tips:

• Stay in well-lighted areas

• Never go out alone

• Have your parents check your treats

• Wear a light-colored costume that makes it easy for you to walk and be seen

• Choose costumes that are marked flame retardant

• Carry a flashlight and use reflective tape on your costume so people driving cars can see you

• Cross streets only at the corners.  Never cross the street between parked cars.

• Take off your mask before you cross a street or use makeup instead of a mask

• Plan your route in advance with your parents

Beggar’s night is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
