After three years of planning and fundraising, the Friends of Rock Creek State Park were able to donate a new handicap accessible pier to the park.

“We look forward to many people taking advantage of this pier,” FRCSP President Marilyn Deppe said. “It has been designed to be wheelchair accessible, but is also perfect for families and children and anyone who wants to be out over the water to fish or simply enjoy the sunshine and water.”

The project cost more than $80,000 and representatives from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, members of FRCSP, citizens and Iowa Sen. Dennis Black attended the dedication ceremony.

“I guarantee you will see wheelchairs  on this (pier) for years to come and that’s when you will really know, deep down, you did the right thing,” Black said.
