Newton freshmen win, junior varsity loses at Dallas Center-Grimes

GRIMES — Newton’s freshmen netted a win over Dallas Center-Grimes Tuesday, while the Cardinal junior varsity dropped a two-set decision.

The Cardinal freshmen won 25-14, 25-23 at DCG. Kaytlin Ahn led the Cardinals with 10 digs, three ace serves, and two kills. Fran Lucas made eight digs. Alyssa Bartels had two kills.

Maddy Berstler served up one ace, plus had four kills at the net. Stephanie Hoebelheinrich and Sydney Hemann each had three set assits.

For the Newton junior varsity, things didn’t go as well. It lost 25-14, 25-20 to the Fillies Tuesday. Emma Meyer was 11-of-11 at the service line with one ace for Newton. Ryanne Raush went 9-for-9 with two aces, and was 7-for-7 in serve receive.

Bailey Davis had four kills, going 8-for-9 in net attacks. Morgan Allen had three kills. Taylor Shipley put up eight set assists. Courtney Jacobson had one ace serve.

The Newton JV competed in a tournament at Indianola on Saturday. The Cardinals lost 21-14, 21-3 to Valley, 21-9, 21-17 to Ankeny, and 21-19, 21-15 to Urbandale. They split with Southeast Warren, losing 21-12 and winning 21-15.
