PCM moves to 2-0 in district with win at I-35

TRURO — Fresh off a big win to open district play against Collins-Maxwell/Baxter on Sept. 20, Prairie City-Monroe head coach Greg Bonnett said the team needed to treat the long ride down to Truro to face Interstate 35 as a “business trip”.

His team seemed to get the message, effectively taking care of business with a 35-6 victory. The win moves the Mustangs to the top of the Class 2A, District 6 standings in a tie with Albia, which sits at 3-0.

Senior Blake McWilliams shouldered the brunt of the yardage burden for the Mustangs with 150 rushing on 18 carries, but the scores were well spread out, with four different Mustangs scoring touchdowns.

Zach Uhlenhopp continued to impress in his senior campaign with the versatility he exhibited. He ran the ball twice for 31 yards, caught two balls for 27 yards and a touchdown, and he returned a punt 47 yards for a score. Uhlenhopp also had a kickoff return that nearly went the distance, returning one 70 yards.

Quarterback Logan Gilman threw the ball eight times, completing five passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Jade Coleman rushed six times for 36 yards and a touchdown. Ronnie Marshall ran seven times for 43 yards and a touchdown.

The Mustangs picked off three passes on the night. Clay Cooper, Ricky Reeve and McWilliams had those turnovers. Marshall and Ryan Jennings each recovered fumbles, as well.

McWilliams led the team with 12 tackles, followed by Luke Pendroy with 11. Coleman had 10 tackles. Marshall recorded nine. Brandon Charls had eight tackles, and Luke Cummings had five.
