Newton Police Department
• Derrick S. Bayliff, 41, of Newton was charged with public intoxication and possession of drug paraphernalia after officers were dispatched at 1:30 a.m. Saturday to 208 E. Fourth St. S. on a report of an intoxicated individual. Bayliff walked down the stairs, with his pants below his knees, and when he saw the patrol car he went back up the stairs. The officer then called him down, where Bayliff performed field sobriety tests, which he failed. A field test resulted in a BAC of .033. He was taken to jail.
• Alex W. Bentley, 15, of Newton was charged with possession of alcohol under the legal age after an officer witnessed reckless driving at 9:17 p.m. Sept. 14 at Newton Senior High School. When he approached the group he noticed they were all chewing gum, but the officer still smelled alcohol. Bentley then furnished a bottle of Hawkeye vodka and a bottle of Black Velvet. Everyone’s BAC in the group was between .01 and .00.
