Sully, Kellogg Lions to celebrate diamond anniversaries
The Sully and Kellogg Lions Clubs will celebrate their diamond (60-year) anniversaries at a joint meeting on Thursday at the Sully Community Center, with Lions fellowship beginning at 6:15 p.m. and dinner and program beginning at 6:45 p.m.
The Sully Lions Club was chartered on Sept. 15, 1953, and two days later a Lions Club was chartered in Kellogg. Together, the two clubs have served eastern Jasper County for the past 60 years.
Past International Director David Stoufer of Washington will be the guest speaker. A greeting also will be extended by District Governor Don Maynes of Pleasant Hill. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Sully Adult Small Jazz Band under the direction of Don Musgrove. The evening will be presided over by the two clubs’ presidents, Warren Pick of the Sully club and Allen Ricks of the Kellogg club. Part of the festivities of the evening will be the awarding of door prizes representative of the two communities.
The Sully Lions actively support projects in the community, including sponsorship of the annual Fourth of July celebration, overseeing the Community Energy Fund and supporting the Lynnville-Sully After-Prom party, the Sully United Fund drive, KidSight and the cornea transport project.
Kellogg Lions support their community through monthly pancake breakfasts served during the winter and spring months each year. Proceeds from the breakfasts support community programs and Lions’ charities. Kellogg Lions members also are active with cornea transport, Meals on Wheels delivery, maintaining the community sign, literacy programs and service on a number of community committees.
Together, the two clubs join with more than 10,000 Iowans and more than 1.3 million men and women in 206 countries in the world who work together to answer the needs that challenge their communities. Lions are primarily known for working to end preventable blindness.
