Mustangs go the distance with Greene County

Prairie City-Monroe’s volleyball team is getting close, according to coach Mollie Keitges, but they aren’t quite there yet. The Mustangs dropped a five-set barn burner at Jefferson-Scranton on Thursday afternoon, their tightest matchup of the season.

PCM dropped the first set 25-16 before fighting back to win the second set handily, 25-15. The Mustangs dropped the third set 25-18, but they would not go quietly into the night, rallying to take the fourth set 27-25. The final set to 15 was tight the whole way, but the Rams held on for a 15-12 victory.

Lexi Kain led the Mustangs with 12 kills followed by Abbi Gilson with nine. Gilson and Katie Vande Wall tied for the team lead with three blocks apiece. Emma Williams had 28 assists in the five games, tops on the squad. Kenzie Clarke led in digs with 16. Kain and Courtney Van Houweling each picked up 15 digs. Vande Wall was 16-for-16 on serves. Kayla Jennings was 17-for-18 with one ace.

The Mustangs’ next matchup will be on Tuesday, when they host Collins-Maxwell/Baxter.
