Newton freshman lose to Boone

NEWTON — Newton’s freshmen stayed with Boone for the first half of play Friday night at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals trailed 14-7 at halftime.

“The final score of the game did not show how competitive and close the game actually was,” said Trent Powers, NHS assistant coach. “We had the ball, down 14-7 in the 4th quarter, then it all kind of fell apart.”

Boone scored 20 points for a 34-7 win over Newton. The Cardinal freshmen are 1-2 on the season.

Reagan Maple scored the Cardinal touchdown on a two-yard run. Reese Rosenquist had 62 yards rushing. Keith Steinbach rushed for 43 yards, and had 19 yards receiving.

Brady Smith recovered a fumble, and Morgan Maher intercepted a Boone pass. Justice Borger, Caden Manning, and Tyler Dawson each had a tackle for loss.

“We are really proud of how the boys decided to fight until the end. We could have easily given in, but instead we decided to hit back against a very big and physical Boone team,”  Powers said. “We feel the boys grew a lot as a football team this week, and we cannot wait for our game next Friday.”

Newton is at South Tama this Friday.
