Toreadors spoil Cardinals' homecoming

Only Pella Christian of the six area high schools notched a win in Week 3 of football action. Here's the round up and look for more on the games in Monday's Daily News.

Boone 41, Newton 20

NEWTON — It was Boone's No. 13 on Friday the 13th that spoiled Newton's homecoming. Alex Davis, Boone's quarterback, led the Toreadors to a 41-20 win over the Cardinals at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

Boone rolled up over 400 yards of rushing with Davis leading the way. The Toreadors scored seven times in the game, six were by runs. Davis had all three second-half touchdown runs of 84 yards, two yards and four yards.

The Cardinals had no answer for the Toreadors' rushing attack, Jaymen Tedrow, Kane Springis, Levi Morain and Jesse House powered up the middle along with Davis.

Down 20-0, Newton mounted a scoring drive, finished off by a "not-going-to-be-denied" run by Tristan Peters from four yards out. Newton trailed 27-7 at halftime.

"Boone's a very good team. We challenged our guys to come back out and play hard after halftime. They did," said Ed Ergenbright, Cardinal head coach. "We just never could stop them offensively and get any momentum."

Davis busted out the 84-yard scoring dash to open the third quarter. Newton came back to close the gap to 20 points again, 34-14, on a five-yard run by Deonne Harris late in third period. Tyler Wood did add a two-yard touchdown run for Newton at the 7:14 mark of the fourth quarter, closing the gap to 34-20.

The Cardinals drop to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in Class 3A, District 4 play. They travel to South Tama next Friday.

Pella Christian 31, Central Decatur 14

LEON — Pella Christian's Eagles scored on offense, special teams and defensively Friday night in their 31-14 win over host Central Decatur. Trailing 6-0, the Eagles scored 17 unanswered points to take the lead in the second quarter. They were up 17-12 at halftime.

Colten Collins had a quarterback sneak for a touchdown, Jacob Brouwer kicked a 32-yard field goal and Mason Howerzyl dashed 18 yards for a TD. In the third quarter, it was a wild finish to a drive for a score for the Eagles. On a fourth-and-goal play, Pella Christian didn't covert at the one-yard line.

Central Decatur fumbled the ball in the end zone and the Eagles recovered the football for a touchdown.

Central Decatur sacked Collins in the end zone late in the third quarter for a safety. Collins responded late in the game with a pick-six on defense.

"This was a big win for us. We got thumped pretty good last week by PCM. The boys came out and played hard. We didn't play well at times on offense tonight, but it's a good rebound game," said Pella Christian head coach Rich Kacmarynski.

Pekin 33, Lynnville-Sully 12

SULLY — Too many turnovers in the second half doomed Lynnville-Sully's Hawks at home against Pekin's Panthers in Class A, District 6 play. The Hawks kept the game close in the first half, down 7-6 at the break.

"We just had a lot of errors in the third quarter. We have to take care of the football better," said Mike Parkinson, Hawk head coach. "Down 33-6 after three quarters, our guys played well in the fourth quarter and we got a score."

Bailee Samson had a four-yard run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Samson fumbled the football on the Hawks' drive in the second period, but teammate Darin Hofer recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

Van Meter 67, Colfax-Mingo 19

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo's Tigerhawks suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night, losing a difficult Class 1A, District 7 opener at home to Van Meter. The Tigerhawks fell behind early 14-0, and they had a touchdown pass nullified by offsetting penalties. Van Meter proceeded to score two touchdowns before C-M got on the board with a 35 yard TD pass.

C-M will attempt to avenge this loss next week when the Tigerhawks head to Mount Ayr.

West Marshall 28, Prairie City-Monroe 6

MONROE — The Mustangs of Prairie City-Monroe fell to visiting West Marshall 28-6. This loss for the Mustangs marks their first of 2013 after starting off the season with wins over Knoxville and Pella Christian.

PCM starts distrtict play next Friday, when they take on Collins-Maxwell/Baxter

Bondurant-Farrar 49, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 27

BAXTER — In their District 6 opening game, the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter Raiders were taken down by visiting Bondurant-Farrar, 49-27.

B-F got ahead 12-0 before the Raiders got on the board with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Zach Samson to Bryce Kemp. B-F would answer with a 25-yard touchdown pass one play after a CMB punt to close out the first half scoring with B-F ahead 19-6.

The scoring picked up in the second half, but CMB couldn't keep up, and the Raiders fell to 0-2 at home this season.
