DAR celebrates Constitution Week
Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution Grinnell Chapter met recently with Mayor Mike Hansen, who signed a proclaimation designating this week Constitution Week to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.
Sept. 17 marks the 226th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention. While serving as president of the NSDAR, Gertrude S. Carraway initiated the designation of Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week. The DAR adopted its own resolution for Constitution Week on April 21, 1955.
Members of the United States Congress received the DAR resolution and discussed it June 7, 1955. The first resolution to observe Constitution Week was made June 14, 1955, by Sen. William F. Knowland of California. Following the passage of the resolution by both Houses of Congress, President Eisenhower issued his proclaimation on Aug. 19, 1955.
